Zones and shifts
Assign nurses to zones, the triage pool, the support pool, charge and the physician in charge in EDFlow, and how those assignments route patient requests and decide who is on shift.
Zone assignments decide who is on shift, whose phone rings for which patient, and which nurse patients see. Open Zones from the header.

Assign the shift
Check the shift
The page shows the current shift from the site's settings (by default Day 07:00–19:00, Night 19:00–07:00).
Start from last shift
Copy from last shift, then adjust.
Assign each zone
Use the select control for each zone to add nurses. Drag and drop works too, but is never the only way.
Assign the pools and leads
- Triage pool: triage nurses for the waiting room.
- Support pool: support staff for comfort requests.
- Charge nurse or nurses.
- Physician in charge, who receives the second level of urgent escalation.
- Physicians on shift, used for per-hour clinician metrics.
How assignments route requests
- A patient without an explicit primary nurse gets every nurse assigned to their bed's zone (the most specific assignment wins). Patients see up to two names.
- Waiting-room and triage locations route to the triage pool; patients see "The triage nurse".
- When a patient moves to a bed in another zone, their nurse and their new requests follow within 2 s.
- If nobody is on shift for a route, the request goes to charge, then the physician in charge, then every on-shift clinician.
See Requests for the full routing table.
On shift
Staff are on shift when they are assigned in the current shift. Each person can override it in the companion app's Me tab (for example when covering a break). Going off shift removes a person from routing and push within 5 s.
End of shift
End shift releases the assignments. When a patient's derived nurse changes at shift change, the patient gets a quiet note in their inbox ("Your nurse changed at 19:00"), with no push.
