Results and reassessment

How result status reaches patients in EDFlow: the site's results display delay, holding and releasing results, all results back, serial tests, reassessment, and the results-back digest.

EDFlow never receives, stores or shows result values. Patients see only a test's steps and when it is back. This page explains how you control when "back" appears.

When "back" appears

Each test has a result threshold per type (for imaging, preliminary report by default; performed for X-ray where ED physicians read their own films). When a test passes it, it shows Back to the patient after the site's display delay:

results.displayDelayMinutes (default 0 minutes)
  • The first result back after the patient is seen sends one "Some of your results are back" notice. Later results update the screen silently.
  • Results of directive tests done before the patient is seen update silently and send nothing.
  • When every counted result is back and the patient has been seen, the stage becomes Results back: waiting to see your care team again, with the usual time to reassessment.
Tests screen with every result back and the stage "Results back: waiting to see your care team again". The results themselves are never shown.

Holding results

results.holdAllowed (default true)

On the patient's Tests tab, Hold results status keeps completed tests at "In the lab" or "Being read" and sends no result notice. The patient sees: "Your care team is reviewing your tests. They'll talk with you about them." Release results now shows every completed test as back at once. A disposition also releases the hold.

Serial tests

For tests that usually need a repeat (for example troponin), the patient sees "A repeat test is usually needed" after the first result, and all-back waits for the site's serial hold time unless a repeat order or a disposition arrives. A timed repeat shows "Scheduled for about …" with no estimate until then.

More tests after all back

A new result-bearing order returns the patient to "Tests under way" and adds "More tests were ordered. This is common and part of making a plan with you." to their inbox, without a push. The next all-back notifies again.

Reassessment

Reassessment is recorded by an EHR reassessment event, a disposition, Seen again, or (where the site maps them) a new order after all back, a consult request, a signed note or a move to a procedure area. The board shows a Results back alert with the time since all-back: amber after p75, flagged as the bottleneck after p90.

Results-back digest

In My profile → Notifications, turn on the Results back digest to get "Results back · Zone A" (bed label only if the site allows it) once per visit per result cycle.
