Care team
Who is looking after you in the emergency department: your doctor, a doctor in training, your nurse and specialists, and why some names show only a first name.
Tell a staff member now
Don't wait for a reply on your phone. Tell any nurse or staff member right away, or press your call bell. If you're in the waiting room, go to the triage desk.
If this is an emergency, call 911. For health advice, call Health811 at 811.
The Care team screen shows the people looking after you, by name and role. It updates when someone new joins your care, for example at a shift change.

Who you may see
| Section | Who | What they do |
|---|---|---|
| Your doctor | A doctor, a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant | Leads your care in the emergency department. If you stay in the hospital, this becomes the admitting team. |
| Doctor in training | A resident | A doctor who is finishing specialty training. They work with your doctor. |
| Your nurse | Your nurse | Looks after you on this shift. |
| Specialist | A specialist | Another kind of doctor your care team asked to see you. |
| Also caring for you | For example a respiratory therapist, social worker, pharmacist, support worker or student | Helps with parts of your care. Some hospitals don't show this section. |
Names and photos
- Doctors are shown with their full name, for example "Dr. Demo Elm".
- Other staff are shown with a first name and the first letter of their last name, or only a first name. The hospital chooses.
- Photos appear only when the staff member chose to share one and the hospital allows it.
- Some staff may not appear at all, for their own safety or privacy.
- There are never phone numbers or email addresses. To reach your care team, use requests or ask in person.
When someone changes
When your nurse or doctor changes, you see a note for two hours, for example: "Your nurse changed at 7:00 p.m." with the name of your new nurse.
Before anyone is assigned
You see: Your care team will show here once they're assigned. Until then, the triage nurse is looking after you.
