Asking your care team

Send a request to your care team in EDFlow: a blanket, water, help to the washroom, an interpreter, a question, or to say you're stepping out. What "Seen by" means, reminders, limits and cancelling.

Tell a staff member now

Don't wait for a reply on your phone. Tell any nurse or staff member right away, or press your call bell. If you're in the waiting room, go to the triage desk.

If this is an emergency, call 911. For health advice, call Health811 at 811.

The Requests screen lets you ask your care team for things without waiting for someone to walk by. Each request goes to the right person: your nurse, the nurses in your area, the triage nurse, or a support worker.

If you feel worse

The first button is always I feel worse. Use it and also tell a staff member in person. See If you feel worse.

The kinds of requests

Requests are in three groups. Your hospital decides which ones you see, and some only appear at certain steps of your visit.

GroupExamples
Where I amI'm stepping out, I'm back, I'm going to the washroom
What I needBlanket, water, help getting to the washroom, my pain is worse, I feel sick to my stomach, my IV is beeping or hurts, help with nicotine cravings
QuestionsCan I eat or drink?, when will I see the doctor?, I need an interpreter, I need a sign language interpreter (ASL or LSQ), I have a question for my care team

"Where I am" requests are marked Lets staff know. They update where staff can find you. They don't ask anyone to do something.

Sending a request

Tap the request

Most requests send right away. You see Sent · Undo for 5 seconds, in case you tapped by mistake.

Read the note, if there is one

Some requests show a short note before you send them. For example, for "Can I eat or drink?": We'll ask your nurse. Please wait for their answer before you eat or drink. Tap Send.

Wait for "Seen by"

Sent to your care team. They may not see it right away. When someone sees it, the request shows their name.

"When will I see the doctor?"

This question is answered on the spot with the usual wait for your step. Your nurse is told only if you have waited longer than most people.

Reminders and duplicates

If you tap the same request again, it won't send twice. It shows when you sent it. After about 10 minutes, you can tap Send a reminder. The reminder moves your request up. It doesn't make a new one.

Cancelling

While nobody has seen your request yet, you can tap Cancel.

Stepping out

Please tell your nurse before you leave the department. Please tell your nurse before you leave the department. If you're called while you're away, you may have to wait longer. When you come back, tap I'm back. Some patients don't see the stepping-out request, because their care team needs them to stay.

Thinking of leaving?

Please talk to a nurse first. Please talk to a nurse before you go. We've let your care team know. You can still be seen.

When your care team calls you

Staff can send you a message to come back, for example: Please come back to the waiting room. The team is ready for you. Tap I'm on my way so they know you saw it.

Limits

You've sent a lot of requests. Please ask a staff member in person. This happens only after many requests in one hour.

When you're offline, requests can't be sent: You're offline. Tell a staff member in person, or try again when you're connected.

After you leave the department, requests are closed.
