Companion app
The EDFlow staff companion app on hospital-managed phones: request inbox, my patients, patient card, department, on-shift status, scanning a visit card, and push notifications while on shift.
The companion app puts your request inbox and your patients in your pocket. It runs only on hospital-managed phones, in staff mode of the same app patients use. It calls the same functions as the console, with the same permissions and audit.
Tabs
Inbox
Requests routed to you, your zone, or the triage pool when you're in it, grouped by priority. Filter Mine, My zone or All.
- Non-urgent rows: Acknowledge and Resolve buttons, plus swipe right to acknowledge and left to resolve.
- Urgent rows (pinned): Going now, Can't go, Handled in person.
My patients
Patients where you are on the care team or in your zone: display name (masked if confidential), bed, stage, time in stage, pending tests, open requests and tasks. Search by name or bed.
Patient card
Opening a patient is audited. You see the stage and timeline, tests, tasks, requests, care team and care flags, and quick actions by permission: Assign me, Seen, Seen again, Add a task, Start observation, Call back, Pause updates, Hide from the patient view, Approve pairing code.
Department
Active codes, Call a code (two separate sheets, so it can't be done in one tap), the volume level and the feed state.
Me
Your on-shift status (from zone assignments, with a manual override) and zone, notification settings, biometric lock, switch site, sign out. Going off shift removes you from routing and push within seconds.
Scanning a visit card
Tap Scan and point the camera at a patient's card. In staff mode the app never signs in as the patient: it opens that patient's card for you, if you're allowed to see patients at that site, and records the access. A card from another site shows "This card is for another hospital."
Push notifications
You get push only while you're on shift. Payloads never contain patient details:
- "Urgent request · Zone B", "Request escalated · Zone A", "Urgent request · Patient OUTSIDE the department"
- "Results back · Zone A" (physicians who opt in)
- "Code called" (off by default, since you hear the overhead page)
- "EHR feed down" (integration roles)
Urgent requests use the time-sensitive level on iPhone and a high-importance channel on Android. From the lock screen, the only action for an urgent request is Can't go, and it needs Face ID, fingerprint or your passcode. Acknowledging a non-urgent request from the lock screen also needs device authentication.
Security
- Staff mode needs a phone passcode and a hospital-managed device.
- After 5 minutes in the background, the app asks for Face ID, fingerprint or the passcode.
- Sessions end after 12 hours, or when your manager signs you out.
