Tasks
Patient tasks in EDFlow: which tasks are created automatically from orders (urine samples, consent, check before eating, nothing by mouth), adding tasks from templates, and confirming tasks patients mark done.
Tasks tell the patient what they need to do or know. Many are created from orders automatically; you add others from approved templates. There is no free text.
Tasks created from orders
| Trigger | Patient sees |
|---|---|
| Urine order, voided or clean catch, patient old enough, no "Nurse will collect" | "Hand your sample to your nurse. Don't leave it in the washroom." Done by itself when the lab records the sample |
| Same, child in guardian mode | "Your nurse will help collect a urine sample from your child." |
| Order with contrast or consent | The site's consent wording |
| Contrast order and no NPO | "Before you eat or drink, please check with your nurse." |
| NPO diet order, NPO flag, or you add NPO | Restriction: "Please don't eat or drink anything for now, not even water…" |
| Abdomen or pelvis CT or X-ray, female or unknown sex, age 12 to 55 | Pregnancy check before the scan |
| MRI | MRI safety questions |
| Pelvic ultrasound needing a full bladder | Drink water, don't empty the bladder |
| CT with oral contrast | "Your nurse will give you a drink for your scan…" |
A CT with contrast never creates "nothing by mouth" on its own. Only an NPO order or your instruction does. An active NPO replaces the full-bladder and oral-contrast tasks with "Please ask your nurse before you drink anything for your scan."
Mark Nurse will collect on a urine order (catheter, bag, or you'll collect it) so no task appears.
Adding a task
Patient → Tasks → Add from template. Default templates include: change into a gown, stay in your room or area, keep your arm still (IV), give your nurse a list of your medicines, don't drive yourself home, arrange a ride home, go to X-ray, give a stool sample, nothing to eat or drink; and for children, the oral rehydration schedule, numbing cream applied, and nothing to eat before sedation. Managers edit templates in Patient content.
When a patient taps "Done"
The patient confirms, sees "We've let your nurse know", and a Patient updates item appears in your queue (normal priority, no service level). Confirm it, or the order data confirms it (a urine sample at "collected").

Clearing
Clear a task that no longer applies. Restrictions lift when the order ends or you clear them.
